The Mobile Bay region is located in Southwest Alabama at the head of Mobile Bay. The region includes Mobile and Baldwin counties and covers an area of 2,829 square miles. The city of Mobile is the dominant urban area. The region offers an abundance of cultural and recreational opportunities for people of all ages – a variety of museums, theater, symphony, opera, ballet, fishing, golfing, relaxing at the beach and much more. With an estimated population of 564,071 in 2006, the Mobile Bay region’s Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is the second largest metro area in the state. The population grew by 13.3% between 1990 and 2000. Mobile County, the second largest county in the state, has 399,635 residents. Baldwin County’s estimated 2006 population is 162,913. Baldwin County experienced a population increase of 42.9% from 1990 to 2000, which makes it the second fastest growing county in Alabama.
